Introduction

Assalamualaikum guys!! Welcome to my first blog. My name is Dayanna binti Rashidi. I am currently study at UiTM Pahang Campus Jengka. I am from Diploma in Science (AS120) programme. The purpose of this blog is I am going to share about module G which is I had learned on 25th july 2018. First week, this module was conducted by Madam Siti Fadhilah binti Abdul Hamid and Sir Muhammad Isha bin Ismail. So, let’s go for it!

Topic 1: Getting Ready to Learn

conducted by Madam Siti Fadhilah

v Making the transition (from school to university)

What Are Some Differences Between School and College Academics?

Ø  You spend less time in class
Ø  You spend more time studying outside of class (hopefully)
Ø  You have more reading
Ø  You have fewer tests
Ø  You might not be reminded of due dates and exams
Ø  There are fewer daily assingments and they may not be checked
Ø  More team/group assingments with meeting outside of class
Ø  No extensions on due dates
Ø  You can drop a class
Not to mention
Ø  You may be living on your own for the first time… Hostel Life!!
Ø  You may be making new friends
Ø  You may be managing your own finances for the first time

Class Time & Study Time

School
College
Classes meet about an hour a day for 180 days a year
Classes meet about 3 hours a week for 15 weeks
In class = 180 hours
In class = 45 hours
Difference = 135 hours per class in which you are responsible for your own learning!

Therefore, you have to remind yourself  that you are not in school anymore!

v Characteristics of successful students

8 Steps to College Success

·         Attend all classes
·         Become an active learner
·         Participate in class
·         Get to know your lecturers
·         Form study groups with friends
·         Stay up to date with your work
·         Be receptive to change
·         Work hard this semester

So, how do you step up your game?

Ø Make a weekly schedule, use a planner
Ø Make a master list of all
Ø Don’t get behind on readings- read the assigned material before class
Ø Learn how to take good notes: get notes from missed classes from a reliable source
Ø Get to know your instructor
Ø Ask for HELP!

v Using learning styles to enhance performance

Madam Fadhilah gave us tasks for us to answer what our preferred learning style and this is my anwers;

Topic 2: Goal Setting

Image result for goal setting

Conducted by Sir Muhammad Isha

v Setting goals for the new semester

Sir Isha was asking students what their goal are and most of them answered that they want to get dean’s list for every semester. First of all, the definition of a goal is an observable and measurable end result having one or more objectives to be achieved within a more or less fixed timeframe. Also goals are the ends toward which we direct our effort. In other words, goals are things we want to achieve in our precious life. This is my favorite quote about goal;

“Failing to plan is planning to fail”- Alan Lakein

Here is a list of my goals in my university life;
ü I want to get CGPA 4.00 in every semester
ü I want to get vice cansellor award at the end of my study

The 5 Steps Approach

·         Attainable (achieveable)
·         Measureable (pointer)
·         Has a time limit
·         Within your control
·         In writing

After that we were watching video about SMART;

Specific
Measureable
Achieveable
Realistic
Time
S
M
A
R
T

3 steps to success

  • ·         Set the goals
  • ·         Make a commitment and hard work
  • ·         Be accountable

IF the plan doesn’t work. Change the plan but never the goal

Topic 3: Time Management

Image result for time management

The definition of time management is the ability to use one’s time effectively or productively, especially at work.

“Belum lagi kedua kaki seorang hamba bergerak pada hari kiamat, ditanyalah tentang usianya, dihabiskan untuk apa; tentang ilmunya, digunakan untuk mengerjakan apa; tentang hartanya, diperoleh dari mana dan dibelanjakan untuk apa; tentang badannya, digerakkan untuk apa.” (Hadis Riwayat Tarmizi)

  This hadith proves that age, time, property and knowledge are important in our lives. Especially we as students must be a punctual and discipline person. Such as, submit our assignments before the due date. Also, we can manage our time by creating our own daily planner. It sure can organizes your day into a better day. Here is my daily planner on 25th july 2018;

Conducted by sir Muhammad Sufyan

  Sir Sufyan shows us learning pyramid;

v Understanding memory processes

§  Memory –  the retention of information overtime. The mind stores and remember information (mental processes / cognition) like computer software
§  Brain –  an organ

Memory structure

Definition
-Capacity that permits organisms to benefit from past experience
Structure
1.    Working memory
2.    Long-term memory
Function
-Storage of information (putting information in memory)
-Retrival of information (getting information out of memory)
-System specific functions

Forgot & Remember

Why we forgot things easily;

  • §  Distraction
  • §  Focus
  • §  Time factor

It’s easy to remember if;
§  Repetition
§  Rehearsal

And that’s it for today. Thank you! Meet you next week .

Hey guys!! Without we even realized it, we are already at the end of the week. Oh my god! I can smell my mom’s sambal udang and sambal belacan from here. Hehehe. I cannot wait for this Saturday for me to go home but at the same I feel down because interim weeks will end very soon.. It is because interim weeks instruct me how to survive in the university life and so on. Without further ado, let’s go to the second last topic conducted by madam Siti Fadhilah binti Abdul Hamid!

Topic 6: Taking Lecture Notes

Image result for taking notes

Conducted by madam  Siti Fadhilah

First of all, what is note taking? Note taking is writing down ideas from lectures and readings in our own words.

Why take notes?

  •      Helps us to pay attention in class
  • ·         Helps us study for quiz, tests/final exam
  • ·         Helps us improve our memory
  • ·         Helps us take ownership of ideas
  • ·         Helps us engage our senses
  • ·         Helps us organize and process data and information
  • ·         Helps the lectures test students on how well they captured given information

Why review notes?

  • ·         We lose 80% of what we hear if it is not reviewed within a few hours
  • ·         Identify any questions for peers, the next class or to ask lecturer
  • ·         There is not enough time to absorb all the information given in class if it is not reviewed on a regular basis
  • ·         Think: “if  I were tested on this lecture tomorrow, would I answer it?” Make it so!

Before class
  • ·         Review the notes from the day before
  • ·         Review your reading assignment
  • ·         Make sure you have paper, text, pens/pencils, handout
  • ·         Write the date at the top of your paper for notes
  • ·         Leave spaces between the lines so that you can add information later

Furthermore, seating and avoid distraction are also the physical factors for students to focus in class and take good notes.

How do we take notes?

  • ·         Date and label notes
  • ·         Give ourselves space to write
  • ·         Use abbreviations, symbols and acronym

  • ·         Use an outline to show:

-Main ideas
-Supports
-Examples
  • ·         Use your own language

How do we prepare for class?

  • ·         Do pre-reading and homework
  • ·         Review syllabus
  • ·         Preview previous notes
  • ·         Look up keywords prior to class

While you taking notes, you have to be an aggressive, not a passive, listener. How? You just have to ask questions and discuss if its permitted. If not, jot questions in your notes and seek out meaning.

Observe the lecturer

  • ·         Be alert to repetition

-When a lecturer repeats a specific point, make a note of it
  •       Watch the board or overhead projector

-If an lecturer writes something down, the material is important
  • ·         Notice the lecturer’s interest level

-If the lecturer is excited about something, it is likely to be on an exam
  • ·         Let go of judgements about lecturer styles

-Don’t let your attitude about a lecturer’s style get in the way of your education

Types of taking notes

Remember SQ4R

·         Survey- overview: quickly scan
·         Question- establish a purpose
·         Read- to answer questions
·         Rite- take notes
·         Review- at the short intervals
·         Recite- answer to questions with the book closed
